Welcome
to Virtual World News! We just finished our test run. There
is more news than we can chase down. And that's good news.
So in 2000 we will start up again with more gatherers. And then
we
will be posting any articles and news, worthy of the net's cultural, virtual,
and socially conscious future.
Virtual World News is built on
the belief these 3 dimensions will grow to predominate the info sphere,
and especially through virtual
worlds over the next 10
years. Since the WWW is all about evolving - please tell us what you want on the
site - we will probably do a lot of experimenting in the first year. As soon as we
get more hosts
- we will produce more than just token daily updates. Please get a
feel for our cultural slant by exploring the "4 Winds" area. If you have
some thoughts - please be the first to make it on our forum pages.

socially conscious - 3 dimensions of the VWN vision
future quote: "I remember when I paid by the minute to
talk long distance."

End of Beta run
Kevin Long |
Virtual World News and its first format are established. 1/10th of a million words will sit here holding until the right
time. At a future point when virtual worlds are closer to being
a household word and some other conditions develop, then this part of
the site will become active. It will bring all the news on
the trends and projects throughout the industry. For now the only active part
of this site will be the Nemo's
Mind updates in our sponsored virtual world
project. You know... the other half of the site. J

Ahh Bluetooth - Tech
Kevin Long |
We hit you up with Bluetooth before. But here is a different
slant to put
us all in the know. This is one of those things
you want to know is coming. Will we all of a sudden, be using
these devices in 12 to 18 months? Technology seems to have a
life of its own these days.

|
Power to the People - Tech |
This one will blow some of your minds. How about ultra fast
internet through the power lines already plugged into your
homes? Just plug
into that wall socket. This is representative of
a lot of ways the industry will provide many alternatives.
And we keep thinking somebody is going to monopolize broad band.

|
Going Mobile - Tech and Cultural |
Here is an element we are all aware of but not everyone has
experienced. Myself, I resisted carrying work with me until this
month. It makes life easier in some ways so I can play more when
I get home. This article is about breaking
away from the anchor of the local PC.

|
Loss of a Frontier - WWW |
The taxation and taming of the Net. It probably can't be avoided
but does it need to happen Now? Here is an article detailing
some European
and US interaction on the deal.

Eye for the Future - Interface
Kevin Long |
On all fronts it seems like solutions for adding sight for the blind
is on its way. Also meaning you may be able to see
VR through the optic nerves someday.

|
On-line Charity Schemes - Social Consciousness |
Here is a scoop on the business
of on-line charities so far. Interesting
read. Hopefully these institutions will band together and handle
the business side themselves.

|
Sweat Shop Collective - Social Consciousness |
Found it! Here is the resource for information and articles on
global sweatshops and the prime
US suspects.

|
Satellites are Falling - Net |
The speed is falling that is. Here is one crusader's push to get
the satellites going for the Net. Imagine
the day in just 2 to 3 years when we will all be on
fast connections downloading movies, music, books, etc. 2-3
years is pretty dang soon in the time sense of technology. Definitely
read past the first page.

Net goes Green! - E-Commerce |
New
thought!! Is the Net already cutting down
on pollution? These guys seem to think so - but it will be easy
enough to prove in just a half decade. This is new and
enlightening stuff here.

|
A Vision of the Future - Social Consciousness |
The inventor of the
WWW looks at how close the WWW is meeting its potential to
bring the world together in perfect harmony.
|
|
Open Source Development goes Pro - Cultural |
Open Source is perhaps the greatest thing to happen to the web over
the last year. All those geniuses
in collaboration on huge scales and huge projects. The
system has even gone professional. Can't hurt. The
collective mind is a great place to be. Hmm - that's 2 in a row
I wrapped with a corny close.

|
Net is bringing the Movies - Future |
Been waiting for the day we can stream
movies through the Net? So have I but by this article it
looks to be a little ways off yet. But there are other players
out there finding the way.

Halls of Blood - Cultural |
I can see the connection between the halls of blood in our schools and
the video games. But I am divided on its impact. I do feel
with all my heart that some of this is backlash against computers and
the Net in general. Here is a rebuttal against that retired Army
guy who seems to like the lime
light.

|
Future Mind - Tech |
The advance of the supercomputer is at the scary fringe in this
revelation from Deep
Blue.

|
The Prez on Digital Divide - Social Conscious |
An agenda
for the new year. Here is the hints on what will
be on the platform. This actually tags onto a referendum of the
Commerce Department that we noted a week ago.
|
|
MSNBC - WWW |
Okay so I have avoided MSNBC - but they are good - here is a bunch of thoughts
by one of their columnists on the web stuff.

Impossible Control - Culture |
Roger Ebert article on his experiences with trying to control the
media and why it just
won't work.
|
|
Bit o Earth art - Art |
Here
is a little digital art for you. This is made by using 3D models
that can be rotated to look at it from any side and then the artist
positions the models and the light effects to place shadows as
desired. Click here or on the picture to see the full picture at
Kenneth
Huff's art site.
